- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
- 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
- 3/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until evenly coated.
- Spread the apple mixture in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
- In a separate bowl combine oats, flour, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- Cut the cold cubed butter into the oat mixture using a pastry cutter or fork until coarse crumbs form.
- Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
- Warm the caramel sauce in a small saucepan or microwave until pourable.
- Drizzle the warm caramel sauce over the baked crisp just before serving.
- Let rest for 5 minutes to allow the juices to thicken slightly.
Notes
- Use firm, tart apples such as Granny Smith for the best balance of sweet and tangy flavors.
- You can prepare the topping and apple filling ahead of time; refrigerate separately and assemble just before baking.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent dessert.
- Store leftover crisp covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
