Description

Sweet brown sugar and balsamic-kissed onions sizzle into a silky cream cheese and sour cream mix, then bake to bubbling, golden-topped perfection. Each scoop unveils layers of caramelized richness and a hint of heat.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions, reduce heat to low, and cook until soft and translucent, about 10 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes over the onions and stir to combine.
  4. Continue cooking, stirring every few minutes, until onions turn deep golden and jammy, about 20–25 minutes.
  5. Stir in minced garlic and balsamic vinegar if using, cooking for 1 more minute then remove from heat.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise until smooth.
  8. Fold the caramelized onions into the cheese mixture.
  9. Transfer the dip to an oven-safe dish and sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly on top.
  10. Bake until the dip is bubbly and the top is lightly browned, about 15 minutes.
  11. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes.
  12. Garnish with chopped chives and serve hot with bread, crackers, or chips.

Notes

  • Slice onions evenly to ensure uniform caramelization.
  • Stir the onions regularly to prevent sticking and burning.
  • Use full-fat dairy for the creamiest texture.
  • Dip can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
