Description

Caramelized onion slices sizzle in butter and oil, then bathe in brown sugar and smoked paprika. Each bite offers sweet, smoky depth with a tangy vinegar finish and fresh thyme aroma, perfect for burgers or dips.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add butter and olive oil until melted and shimmering.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften and turn translucent, about 8–10 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper over the onions and continue to cook, stirring every few minutes to prevent sticking, until the onions are deep golden brown and caramelized, about 20–25 minutes.
  4. Stir in apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme leaves, cook for an additional 2–3 minutes until the liquid is mostly absorbed and flavors meld.
  5. Remove from heat and let the onions rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, deglaze the pan with a splash of beef or chicken broth during caramelization.
  • Adjust the amount of brown sugar to make the onions more or less sweet according to your taste.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
  • These onions are perfect atop burgers, steaks, sandwiches, or mixed into dips.
